Wed 25th Feb: From Takaka we headed back over the Arthur Ranges and in to Motueka an hour later. The main street is very long, as the guide books promised. This area grows apples, pears, kiwi fruit and oranges and it looked like harvest time is soon. The boys had a play in the playground, as the photo shows. From there we headed inland and drove through nowhere for 2 hours until we got back to Murchison, where we were about a week ago. Murchison is a small town of 750 people that services the surrounding farming community. There are basic food stores and a hardware store but little else. Apparently the town was all but destroyed in an earthquake in 1929. To get clothes, shoes, and anything more than basic provisions it is 2 hours to the ludicrously long street in Motueka, or an hour-and-a-half to Nelson. This “back of beyond” is referred to in NZ as the ‘wop wops’.
The other photo is of the boys playing while Steve smoked one of yesterday’s salmon. This is a zig-zag slide that Grandma and Grandad bought Jonathan for his birthday, and connects on to other Hot Wheel tracks they were given for previous birthdays and Christmas. They spend hours connecting these tracks in different configurations.
