A short first lesson in Maori

Thursday 2nd April: A warm sunny day with clear blue skies, about 18 degrees after an overnight frost. We had our usual Thursday morning of horse-riding, shopping and a Subway lunch in Oamaru. Once back in Waimate we went to the library and came out with another 60 books! The boys are all full of cold so we did some art in the afternoon - we started making a undersea diorama which started to get quite complicated and so will take a while longer to finish.
After tea Steve arrived home in time for me to go to TKD training and then I got busy baking cakes and puddings because we are going away tomorrow morning for a long weekend.
The photo is of a sign outside the health centre in Oamaru. Most signs are in English and Maori, and you get to see some really long words. To pronounce this one you need to know that "wha" is pronounced "fu" and "whanau" is pronounced something like "farno" and is the Maori word for the extended family unit.
There is a funny advert here with some Americans talking about the town Whakatane. They call it "wackertane" with a long Southern drawl, but it is in fact pronounced "fukatarny".
Then of course there's the ski field at Whakapapa!
