Monday 1st June: Queen’s Birthday so a public holiday in NZ. The morning started very cold but bright and frosty. We packed up the motorhome and I took the boys swimming in Cromwell’s pool complex. There were 3 pools plus a spa pool at 38 degrees, and it cost $7.50 (about 3 GBP) altogether! While we were there Steve popped off down the road to see a showhome for a company that makes kitset homes that we have been looking into on the internet.

We had a quick lunch in the motorhome then drove towards Queenstown, down the east side of Lake Wakatipu (first photo), further south towards Lumsden then turned off to Mossburn. We stopped here for a play in an adventure playground we spotted beside the road and Steve and I brewed a cup of tea. Steve and Jonathan enjoyed a cuddle on a swing seat in the sunshine.

We continued on in bright sunlight passing snow-capped mountains and fields of deer (photos)

in to Te Anau (pop. 3500), arriving just after 4pm. As we drove along the waterfront it was very tranquil (final picture).

Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island and the second largest in NZ, with a total of 344 sq km in area. Across the water there are glowworm caves and boat trips go out to them several times a day.
We headed to the campsite and got the slot right next to the playground, the same slot as when the boys and I came to this site back in November. The boys played while I cooked, but as soon as the sun dropped behind the mountains it got very chilly.
